Director of Finance

Overview

Leading the financial stewardship of a $500M construction division within a PE-backed energy services platform, this role demands a finance director who thrives at the intersection of operational complexity and strategic financial management. Reporting directly to the CFO and working closely with divisional COOs, the position offers full P&L ownership and the chance to architect project controls and FP&A functions in a fast-evolving environment. Responsibilities

• Oversee cost control frameworks across multiple active construction projects, ensuring budgets, cost coding, and change orders are accurately managed and aligned with operational realities.
• Collaborate with project managers and field teams to track cost-to-complete metrics, earned value management, and schedule adherence, driving early identification of financial risks and corrective strategies.
• Lead the development and maintenance of rolling forecasts and annual budgets by consolidating granular project data into comprehensive divisional financial plans.
• Conduct detailed variance analyses at both project and portfolio levels, delivering clear, actionable insights to executive leadership and supporting quarterly and long-range financial planning cycles.
• Serve as the primary financial interface between field operations, project management, accounting, and senior leadership, fostering alignment and transparency across functions.
• Mentor and grow a team of project controls and cost analysts, while continuously refining project controls processes, reporting standards, and financial tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
• Support pre-construction financial assessments including budgeting, risk evaluation, and feasibility studies to underpin new project initiatives and capital planning.

Qualifications

• Must-Have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in construction project controls, cost management, or operational FP&A, with a minimum of 3 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Deep expertise in construction cost accounting, job costing, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition methodologies.
  • Proven track record managing budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis at both project and portfolio scales within construction or similarly complex operational environments.
  • Advanced financial modeling and Excel skills, with hands-on experience using project controls or ERP systems such as Procore, CMiC, Viewpoint, Sage 300 CRE, or SAP.
  • Exceptional communication skills capable of translating complex financial data into clear narratives for operational leaders and executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to build structure and processes in less formalized, growth-oriented settings without requiring close supervision.
• Nice-to-Have:
  • MBA, CPA, CCIFP, or PMP certification.
  • Experience in design-build, EPC, or heavy civil construction sectors.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau for enhanced reporting and data visualization.
  • Prior success in establishing or significantly improving project controls functions from inception.
