We are seeking a Tax Manager to join our team of exceptional real estate finance professionals. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape our evolving portfolio of complex tax positions. We are looking for an individual with extensive knowledge of real estate partnership tax concepts who can guide all aspects of the tax function, including research, planning, strategy, and return reviews. Prior exposure to affordable housing and low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC) is a plus. The ideal candidate is both detail-oriented and can focus on the big picture. The position reports to our Director, Finance and is located in Santa Monica, CA.

It is a hybrid position with 2-3 days per week in our office. We welcome and desire folks from all backgrounds to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with external accounting firms to review 200+ tax returns including lower-tier, real-estate-owning partnerships and upper-tier corporate holding companies.
  • Prepare federal and state tax projections for specific real estate partnerships/transactions and on an aggregated basis for partners.
  • Conduct research on various tax issues and legislative changes and update senior management on key implications to our business.
  • Develop models to evaluate capital accounts/basis, estimate the impact of proposed transactions to our tax position, and propose strategic solutions.
  • Perform special projects or duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel, with the ability to develop complex tax models from scratch
  • Deep understanding of relevant taxation topics, including partnership allocations, depreciation concepts, 1031 transactions, section 754 basis adjustments, 704(b) capital rules, and liquidation accounting
  • Ability to perform tax research to guide strategic tax decisions
  • Familiarity with multi-state taxation
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a growing environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize key deliverables

Ideal Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or tax
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • CPA license preferred
  • Familiarity with LIHTC is a plus
